The January Ramble – Around Scorton

Due to the poor walking conditions following the endless rain, Jim wisely decided to abandon the planned walk and substitute an alternative using hard paths and quiet country lanes. The forecast was for a very rare dry, calm day, which proved to be the case. Having paid to park, (a first?), at the car park in Garstang by the river, we started the walk around the playing field and climbed the banking and had a look at the flood defence system, contemplating whether it will be put to use anytime soon? From here, we followed good paths and farm tracks, heading north to arrive at the pretty village of Scorton. Here we enjoyed a leisurely lunch stop, after which we continued our walk, climbing up the very pretty Snow Hill Lane and crossing the M6 by means of the sloping Read more…

Christmas Thought

Christmas is a wonderful time but it can also be a very difficult time for some people. Please remember in your prayers:- Children in families where there are drink or drug problems who are often at greater risk of violence during the ‘festive season’. Those who have no family to share Christmas with. Those who have lost a loved one since last Christmas especially Judith Dixon and her family and Ranjan Mazumdar and his family and all others known to you. Those whose families are separated by great distances which mean that they cannot get together. Those where there has been a break down of family relationships. Those who are seriously ill and those who care for them. May they know the closeness of God our Father and the love and kindness of good neighbours.

The December Ramble – Led by J & J Sommerville

Only four walkers (plus two spaniels) assembled at a small car park next to the cemetery in Great Harwood, on a windy and wet day. The comedian Billy Connolly once said that there was no such thing as bad weather only the wrong clothing. Well Billy the clothing was certainly waterproof and the weather was very bad. Walking down under an old railway bridge and crossing a stream, a track was followed which led to the towpath of the Leeds/Liverpool Canal. Turning left along the towpath the walkers were welcomed to Rishton by torrential rain. This walk was interesting from the industrial archaeology point of view, as at various places boards gave details and the history of the many canal-side mills extinct and extant. As Oswaldtwistle was approached, the rain turned to sleet and it continued until Church, where a Read more…

Prayer Walks

In the New Year we are planning to hold regular ‘prayer walks’. This is a way of combining a gentle stroll with a quiet time to pray for people and organizations in our community and further afield. Each walk will last between an hour and an hour and a half. Some will be round the streets and estates; others will be on the outskirts of the town. For each walk, there will be a sheet with the route and topics for prayer and there will be frequent stops so we can pray together. However if you would like to do the walk at a different time, you can take the sheet and do the route at your own pace. The first walk will be on Saturday January 19th starting from church at 2.00pm. We will be remaining in the Berry Read more…

Christmas Festival

The theme for decorating the church this year is ‘Christmas Carols’. We are asking church and community organizations to do pictures, collages or models to illustrate a Christmas Carol of their choice, so if you know anyone who would like to join in please encourage them. The models need to be on bases not bigger than 60 cm (approx. two feet) square but pictures can be any size. They should illustrate a Carol and NOT a Christmas song like Jingle Bells. The church will be open for people to look at the contributions during the week beginning December 17th. We would appreciate help to look after the church during opening hours which will be 2.30 to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 2.30pm to the start of the Carol Service at 6.30pm on Saturday 22nd. There will be a rota in Read more…

From The Manse: Winter 2007

Dear Friends, The end of the year always seems to be such a rush. People preparing for Advent and Christmas; Rehearsals for Nativities and Carol Services; Cakes and Mince pies to be made; Cards to write. Now whilst preparations in shops and stores seem to get earlier and earlier, I’m always caught in a last minute rush, and I doubt whether this year will be any different. In fact I seem to have far more to do now than I ever did! The one thing that always takes me the most time is buying Christmas presents – I never know what to get! But, it is often said that we learn the most from our children, so perhaps we could take a lesson from this little girl… There is an old story about a man who punished his 3-year-old daughter Read more…

Ladies’ Guild

We began our autumn programme with a social Coffee Evening early in September and since then have had some really good Monday evenings. Thanks to Betty for putting together such varied speakers for us. Our Minister came and spoke about how she was led into becoming a Minister. The ladies enjoyed getting to know Helen better. The evenings followed with talks by John Dixon, Norman Pearson, John Smith from Spurgeons and last week Mel Watson telling us about the holidays she has had with her husband. The Guild ladies enjoy all their times together and the friendships made. Megan Crew Only one more meeting before the first half of our winter programme is finished!! We have seen a rise in our membership and have found the foyer rather crowded at times but we can always move into the Church – Read more…

The November Ramble – The Ribble at Mitton

The walk for this month, led by Janet And Jim, was on home ground and incorporated yet another lovely section of the Ribble Way and consisted of an outward section along the south bank and a return following the north bank. The weather for the walk, as forecast, was dull, but mostly dry and generally pleasant walking conditions. Starting from the car park of the Aspinall Arms, our group of nine plus two dogs set off along the Ribble Way, heading towards Clitheroe, but it wasn’t long before a dog decided to go for a swim in the river. Unfortunately, the bank at this point was quite steep and he had some trouble climbing up. Leaving the river at Edisford bridge, we continued through the grounds of the swimming pool, back to the river and on to the cemetery, joined Read more…
