Held on May 22nd the occasion saw a welcome return of the South Pennine Singers under the direction of Geoff Balson and Sue Temperley. Ably accompanied by Valerie Shoesmith, the choir did not disappoint and led an afternoon of choral and solo performances which delighted the appreciative audience. Choral items, both accompanied and unaccompanied, ranged from Haydn and Finzi to Bacharach, with stops along the way of folk song arrangements and songs from the shows. The men’s section gave their own unique rendition of ‘There is nothing like a dame’ from South Pacific, whilst the ladies led a gentle arrangement of ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’, a Song for Peace. Solo vocal items included Andrea Goffee’s endearing ‘If I loved you’ from Carousel, whilst Evelyn Fawcett, as well as being the amusing compere gave a delightful comic performance of ‘A Singlet for Read more

We would be interested to identify those who appear in the photo. Some of us, including Pam Cliff, have had a look and identified a few people. This leads us to believe that the photo was taken on an occasion when several Longridge churches had met together, probably for a joint choral event. We know that there used to be performances of Messiah in which several churches joined so this may be one of those. If at all possible, we will put the photo on Read more

A ‘Music in the Afternoon’ concert held on September 6th at Christ Church has raised money for the ongoing aid needed in Nepal following the earthquakes in April and May. For Pictures Click Here Guest performers for the 10th in the series, Jane Pembleton-Smyth and Fenella Haworth-Head brought a varied programme of pieces ranging from Bach to ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. Jane, a flautist with 30 years experience in teaching, has also performed in Master Classes and concerts around the North West and is a regular member of Preston Flute Group. The first half featured the popular ‘Badinerie’ from Bach’s Suite No 2 in B minor and Rimsky-Korsakov’s ‘Flight of the Bumble Bee’. Contrasting with these were delightful, lyrical pieces which demonstrated both Jane’s technical expertise and her impressive breath control. As well as playing pieces which demonstrated the virtuosic capabilities of the Read more
