From The Manse: Winter 2007

Dear Friends, The end of the year always seems to be such a rush. People preparing for Advent and Christmas; Rehearsals for Nativities and Carol Services; Cakes and Mince pies to be made; Cards to write. Now whilst preparations in shops and stores seem to get earlier and earlier, I’m always caught in a last minute rush, and I doubt whether this year will be any different. In fact I seem to have far more to do now than I ever did! The one thing that always takes me the most time is buying Christmas presents – I never know what to get! But, it is often said that we learn the most from our children, so perhaps we could take a lesson from this little girl… There is an old story about a man who punished his 3-year-old daughter Read more

Ladies’ Guild

We began our autumn programme with a social Coffee Evening early in September and since then have had some really good Monday evenings. Thanks to Betty for putting together such varied speakers for us. Our Minister came and spoke about how she was led into becoming a Minister. The ladies enjoyed getting to know Helen better. The evenings followed with talks by John Dixon, Norman Pearson, John Smith from Spurgeons and last week Mel Watson telling us about the holidays she has had with her husband. The Guild ladies enjoy all their times together and the friendships made. Megan Crew Only one more meeting before the first half of our winter programme is finished!! We have seen a rise in our membership and have found the foyer rather crowded at times but we can always move into the Church – Read more

The November Ramble – The Ribble at Mitton

The walk for this month, led by Janet And Jim, was on home ground and incorporated yet another lovely section of the Ribble Way and consisted of an outward section along the south bank and a return following the north bank. The weather for the walk, as forecast, was dull, but mostly dry and generally pleasant walking conditions. Starting from the car park of the Aspinall Arms, our group of nine plus two dogs set off along the Ribble Way, heading towards Clitheroe, but it wasn’t long before a dog decided to go for a swim in the river. Unfortunately, the bank at this point was quite steep and he had some trouble climbing up. Leaving the river at Edisford bridge, we continued through the grounds of the swimming pool, back to the river and on to the cemetery, joined Read more

The October Ramble – Led by John Dixon

On an overcast day, only five ramblers assembled at Gordale Bridge, north east of Malham. The route initially started uphill in a westerly direction until the Malham Tarn road was crossed, then swung upwards to reach the top of Malham Cove. By now the group were walking in low cloud and it thickened as they climbed slowly up the dry valley known as Watlowes, scrambled to the top of Comb Scar and crossed the Settle road at Lancaster Gate. At this point Malham Tarn could be seen during gaps in the mist before turning west then south west to Nappa Cross where lunch was taken. This obelisk has recently been restored. From here the route dropped steeply downhill, into the line of the Mid-Craven Fault to reach Malham, thence crossing Malham Beck and following downstream until it met Gordale Beck, (This Read more

Autumn Term

As ever in the Autumn our children and young people face changes. For some it is just new classes, for others it is starting new schools and colleges. We need to support them with prayer throughout their education. We remember the younger children as we see them week by week but the older ones can be easily forgotten. Our congratulations go to all those who passed important exams this summer and those who gained places for further study. Let us especially pray for Sarah Turner in the sixth form at Clitheroe Grammar School and David Rose and Richard Turner as they have begun their studies at Newcastle University. Let us also continue to pray for Oliver Harrisson; Gemma Crompton; Emma and Hannah Charnley in their studies.

Celebration

On October 21st, Colin and I will be hosting a bring and share lunch after the morning service. Come and help me celebrate my 50th birthday and share in a time of fellowship together. We would love to see you there. God bless, Helen

The September Ramble – Parbold Hill

Windmill To Windmill Parbold Hill dominates the West Lancashire countryside and the top provides spectacular views in all directions. This month’s walk starts at the windmill by the canal in the village of Parbold; and climbs to a second windmill at the top of Harrock Hill. Our journey started with a walk along a pleasant stretch of the Leeds & Liverpool canal. A fishing competition was underway on this stretch and we had to thread our way between many serious and dedicated fishermen. Leaving the canal at the second bridge, we started the long and steady climb, first carefully crossing the railway followed by the main road and up through woodland and fields to High Moor Lane. The path was lined with blackberry bushes and provided us with a constant supply of sweet, juicy fruit. In one field, we were Read more
