Shoeboxes

At lunchtime today a white van drew up outside the church and collected 148 shoeboxes covered in attractive Christmas paper and full of presents for deprived children in Eastern Europe.  The two men who collected them were delighted to see so many as they had received very few at their previous collecting points and one church appeared to have got the wrong date altogether so their boxes will probably not make it for this Christmas.   Our boxes looked very good indeed even though we have not managed to do quite as many as last year.    Many people worked very hard during the year so that so much could be achieved.  Several ladies have knitted enormous numbers of hats and scarves.  The Monday Craft Group have contributed in many ways but especially in the rather tedious task of covering the boxes Read more

Craft Fair

Last year, the Craft Group had a really successful Craft Fair so we thought we’d try another one this year.  November 5th saw the church full of stalls although perhaps not quite as many as last year.  We only managed to attract one outside stallholder and the rest were staffed by our own Craft Club members.  However the public response was much improved.  In the morning especially, quite a lot of people came round and bought Christmas Cards and Christmas presents;  home-made baking and jams and marmalades; jewellery and handbags;  calligraphy pictures and hand-knitteds and much, much more.  Many people stopped to enjoy Judith’s refreshments and she kindly kept the stall-holders well-supplied with lubrication throughout.  By early afternoon, three stalls had sold out!!!!  The Sierra Leone craft stall could have sold more bags if there had been any.   We haven’t Read more

Christ Church Christmas Tree Festival

This year, as usual, the people of Christ Church are inviting church and community organisations to take part in a number of Advent and Christmas activities.  This year we are having a Christmas Tree Festival. The church will provide a six foot Christmas Tree for each organisation which wants to take part and the organisation is asked to decorate it on a theme related to Christmas.  The theme is entirely the choice of the participating group but to get you started, here are a couple of ideas.  You could choose a Christmas Carol or song e.g. While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night or The Twelve Days of Christmas and use as many items mentioned in the song as possible or you could use items related to Christmas all beginning with C (or any other letter) or anything else that Read more

October Ramble: Parlick

One or two of our regular walkers, having often seen Parlick in the distance, have said that they haven’t been up it and would like to experience the fell, so today was their lucky day, perhaps. The first challenge was to find the start by navigating the maze of lanes and having got there, to make sure that the weather conditions were suitable for the ascent.  Unfortunately, most of the hill was enveloped in thick cloud, but as we weren’t due to go up until lunch time, there was time for the cloud to lift later. Starting from Fell Foot, we entered the fields for our walk around the base of the fell.  Most of the structure of the Parlick area is composed of Millstone Grit, covered in a thick layer of peat, which in places is badly eroded, making Read more

September Ramble: Around Lancaster

Due to the exceptionally wet conditions following the recent heavy rain, the planned ascent of Parlick had to be abandoned and this pleasant tour of Lancaster substituted at the last minute. We met at St. Georges Quay, on the River Lime and as some of us had done this walk before, it was suggested that, if we walk in the reverse direction, this could be considered to be a new walk. We really do have some clever people in our walking group! Heading south, we followed the bed of the Glasson railway, now a popular and splendid footpath, with the estuary on our right. Numerous ducks and a lone swan passed us on the high tide and the many cyclists proved to be considerate with their bell ringing on the shared path. After a couple of miles, we arrived at Read more

Help And Information

A variety of helpful information has been given to the church recently.

In the foyer there are a number of leaflets from Age Concern entitled PRACTICAL SUPPORT SERVICES.  They give information on how people over 50 can get help with various house cleaning tasks; running local errands or doing shopping.  If this may be of help to you, please take a leaflet. (more…)

Craft Fair

Last year the Monday Craft Group organised a successful Craft Fair.    This year we are planning to repeat the exercise.   The Church will be open from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday November 5th with stalls of hand crafted goods for sale.    Do you have a craft hobby?   Would you like to put the things you make on display or have an opportunity to sell some of your products?   There will be tables of different sizes available and must be booked in advance to facilitate organising the event.    If you would like a table or display area, please see Hazel Scott or John or Carol Spencer before October 10th.    Stalls are free to the Craft Club members who will make a donation to church funds.   Anyone who is not a member of the Monday group will be charged a fee.  The Read more

Changes In Personnel

We are delighted that we have had positive responses to some of our recent appeals. Geoff Balson has volunteered and been confirmed in the post of First (formerly Senior) Steward.    As from September he will take over sorting the Sunday rotas amongst many other responsibilities. Margery Cook has volunteered to take on the Sunday notices.   She will take over from Ranjan in the near future.    Margery’s email address will be placed on the notices together with other details of how to get information to her in future. We have worked out that Ranjan has been doing the notices for the best part of ten years.   We are really grateful to him for his skill and faithfulness in undertaking this important weekly task.  However we value him even more for his company than for his work and we look forward to Read more

Ladies’ Guild

It seems no time since we closed for the summer but very soon we will be meeting again.  It was a lovely evening when we had planned a walk along the canal from Guy’s Court – some taking a short stroll by the canal, others walking much further and others sitting by the canal, enjoying the evening sun.  When all had returned it was time for supper which we all enjoyed.  Before we begin our next programme we have a Coffee evening on Sept. 5th from 7.00 pm with refreshments; a Bring and Buy Stall; plus one or two guessing games.  Do come along and join us if you can. Then on the following Monday Sept. 12th our meetings begin at 7.30 pm when we may have a surprise speaker or someone we all know well.  The new programme will Read more
