The October Ramble - Led by John Dixon
On an overcast day, only five ramblers assembled at Gordale Bridge,north east of Malham. The route initially started uphill in a westerly direction until the Malham Tarn road was crossed, then swung upwards to reach the top of Malham Cove. By now the group were walking in low cloud and it thickened as they climbed slowly up the dry valley known as Watlowes, scrambled to the top of Comb Scar and crossed the Settle road at Lancaster Gate. At this point Malham Tarn could be seen during gaps in the mist before turning west then south west to Nappa Cross where lunch was taken. This obelisk has recently been restored.
From here the route dropped steeply downhill, into the line of the Mid-Craven Fault to reach Malham, thence crossing Malham Beck and following downstream until it met Gordale Beck, (This is where the River Aire commences) and walked along the footpath back to Gordale Bridge, passing the attractive waterfall known as Janet’s Foss. An enjoyable walk in somewhat adverse conditions. Distance walked seven miles.
